Why is the Thai year 543 years ahead?

BE 2569 = 2026 + 543. The 543 is the gap between the Buddha’s passing (parinirvana) and the start of the Common Era, as counted in Thailand.

What the Buddhist Era counts from

The Buddhist Era (พุทธศักราช, BE) counts years from the Buddha’s final passing. In the Thai reckoning this happened 543 years before the Common Era, and BE 1 began one full year after it. So the Thai year is always the Western year plus 543 — but months and days are the same.

Why Sri Lanka and Myanmar add 544

Thailand, Laos and Cambodia treat the year of the parinirvana as year 0; Sri Lanka and Myanmar count it as year 1, so their Buddhist Era is one higher (CE + 544). In Myanmar the year also changes with the lunar calendar, not on January 1.

When Thailand adopted the BE

YearChange
before 1889Official dating in the Chula Sakarat era with a lunar calendar; New Year around Songkran
1889 (BE 2432)King Rama V introduced the solar calendar and the Rattanakosin Era (RS); New Year on April 1
1912 (BE 2455)King Rama VI replaced the RS with the Buddhist Era; New Year still April 1
1940 (BE 2483)A nine-month year: April 1 – December 31
1941 (BE 2484)January 1 became New Year’s Day

That is why Thai documents dated January–March before 1941 show a BE year one lower than today’s count (see the date converter).

Living with two calendars

Thai forms, receipts, contracts and the news use the BE year; passports, visas and international business use the Western year. Thai ID cards show both. When in doubt, a four-digit year starting with 25 is BE.
