Elements
Thais use two kinds of element: the element of the animal (Thai tradition, fixed per animal, e.g. Rabbit is Wood) and the element of the year (Chinese, by the last digit of the CE year, changing every two years).
| Last digit of CE year | Element |
|---|---|
| 0, 1 | Metal |
| 2, 3 | Water |
| 4, 5 | Wood |
| 6, 7 | Fire |
| 8, 9 | Earth |
When does the zodiac year change?
Most Thais now switch animals on January 1. The traditional court calendar switches on the 1st waxing day of the 5th lunar month (around March–April), and Chinese astrology on Chinese New Year, so people born January–April may belong to the previous animal depending on the system.
